How to make FX Makeup PROSTHETICs

Halloween is truly my favorite holiday. I love to dress up, play around with makeup and my newest obsession is creating special effect prosthetics.

A little background on me. Ever since watching the first Lord of the Rings movie and then watching the behind the scenes of it, I started to dream of becoming a professional makeup artist for movies, more so, a special effects makeup artist. It also made me want to become a stunt double too. I just love the thought of being able to truly turn someone into a chameleon. One morning you're a run of the mill human and within a few hours you're an Orc chasing down Frodo and Sam.

I did not pursue the special effects career (nor did I become a stunt double.) Instead I went to college for Event Management because I wanted to have the "full college experience"... going to a school with a football team and what not (Go Knights!) I don't regret my decision as I do have a great job and SO many amazing college memories and friends.

Since graduating college the days of "dressing up" aka wearing the bare minimum for Halloween are now over and the art of special effect makeup has now resurfaced.

I learned how to create liquid latex prosthetics from the very talented Ellinor Rosander & Macs Moser via their YouTube Channel! They have a great tutorial for simple prosthetics that you can make in a large batch so that you do not waste any latex.
To get started you need liquid latex and flour for your ingredients. You will also need a surface to create your prosthetics on. I used parchment cooking paper as I figured the liquid latex, once dry, would come off with ease. You will also need a translucent powder.

So that's it! 4 Simple items:
1) Liquid Latex
2) All Purpose Flour
3) Parchement Paper
4) Translucent Powder

Step 1:
Pour the liquid latex into a bowl. I suggest using a glass bowl as it is easy to clean.

Step 2:
Slowly mix in all purpose flour to make a paste like consistency.

Step 3:
Use a small spatula, spoon, knife... whatever utensil of your choice to scoop out the liquid latex and flour paste onto parchment paper. Begin to configure the paste into wounds in every shape and size. It can be difficult to maneuver at times but with practice you will get more comfortable with it.

Note: After creating the shape of the wounds you desire, leave a layer of latex around all of the edges of the wound. This will help when applying the wound.

Step 4:
Leave over night to dry or use a hair dryer to speed of the process

Step 5:
Dust the dried prosthetics with flour or translucent powder all over. Then find the edge to your prosthetics and slowly begin to peel off of the parchment paper. When peeling make sure to brush the flour or powder under the prosthetic so that nothing sticks together! It turns into quite a mess if the edges stick together. Just imagine you are a paleontologist excavating a dino bone (I also wanted to be a paleontologist when I was growing up.) Be gentle and careful and take your time!  Dust it one final time with powder.

Step 6:
Admire your creations! Congrats you have created your special effects prosthetics! When you are ready to apply , use your regular liquid latex, paint it on the area you want to apply the prosthetic and then press on the prosthetic on top. Again it can take some practice to get it down pact.

Be on the look out for an upcoming tutorial on how to decorate your prosthetics once you have attached it.

Happy Haunting!
